How to test your webcam

Camera preview, mirror and snapshots

Choose your laptop or USB camera after starting. Mirror changes the preview only; downloaded PNG snapshots keep the camera orientation. Resolution and frame rate come from the browser and are not a measured quality score.

Why is my webcam preview black?

If the camera starts but the picture stays black, open the physical privacy shutter, check the camera switch and choose the intended device in Camera. Move into a lit area. Click Stop, close other apps or tabs using the camera, then start again. For a USB webcam, reconnect it or try another port. If the picture is still black, stop this test before checking the camera in another app; a black preview alone does not prove the webcam is broken.

Check your camera before a video call

Use the live view to check framing, lighting and the selected camera. Click Stop before opening Zoom, Google Meet or Teams, then select the same camera and check the call app’s own preview. A working preview here confirms that this browser can receive video; it does not verify another app’s permissions, meeting settings or connection. This test requests video only, so check your microphone separately.

Continue your task

Run a mic check before your call — Check input levels and play back a short recording.

Check your headphones or speakers — Listen to left and right stereo test tones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test a USB or laptop camera?

Yes, if your browser and operating system expose it. Allow camera access, then choose an available device. Supported resolution preferences depend on the camera.

How do I allow camera access after blocking it?

In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, select www.anyutils.dev and allow access. Other browsers have their own site-permission controls. Also check that your operating system allows the browser to use the camera. Reload the page after changing permissions, then click Start camera.

Why does the preview stop when I switch tabs?

AnyUtils stops camera capture when the page becomes hidden or you leave it. This releases the device rather than keeping it active in the background. Return to the page and click Start camera again.

Is my webcam video uploaded or recorded?

No. The live preview stays in your browser and this test does not record video. A still image is saved only when you click Snapshot.

Why does my camera show a different resolution?

Resolution choices are preferences. Your camera and browser select a supported stream size; Camera details and privacy shows the actual size rather than the requested preference.

Does a working preview mean my webcam is perfect?

It means your browser is receiving video. Use the preview to check focus, lighting and framing. This test does not measure camera quality or diagnose every hardware issue.

Can I test a phone camera?

Yes, in browsers that support camera access. Allow permission and select an available camera. Available devices and settings depend on your browser and phone.
