SHA Hash Generator guide
How to Calculate SHA Hashes for Text and Local Files
Calculate SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 for UTF-8 text or local file bytes, copy checksums and understand hashing, whitespace and password-storage limitations.
Open SHA Hash Generator →Before you start
- Use a current browser with JavaScript enabled. Read the limits below before using private or large inputs.
Step-by-step instructions
- Choose Text or Local file as the input mode.
- Enter the exact text, including meaningful whitespace, or choose a file up to 10 MiB.
- Select SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
- Click Generate hash and inspect the lowercase hexadecimal digest.
- Copy or download the digest. Clear removes the local fields.
Interpret results and limitations
Text is UTF-8 encoded without trimming or normalizing whitespace and is bounded to 1 MiB of encoded bytes. Files are hashed as their original bytes, with a 10 MiB limit. Empty text has a valid hash. Unpaired surrogates use the standard TextEncoder replacement character.
Web Crypto requires HTTPS and a supported browser. Hashing is not encryption and cannot recover the input. SHA-256/384/512 are fast general-purpose hashes, not password-storage functions; use a dedicated password hashing scheme in an application.
Example
Use this example to understand the expected behavior before working with your own input.

A checksum differs or Web Crypto is unavailable
Check encoding, whitespace, line endings and selected algorithm. Use file mode for exact file bytes and open the HTTPS site for Web Crypto support.
The interface does not respond
Enable JavaScript, use a supported browser and check the input limits. Reloading clears temporary input and results.
Privacy and cleanup
Inputs and results stay in the current tab. Nothing is uploaded or stored in input history. Optional analytics receives fixed tool identifiers only; entered data, file names and generated values are excluded.
