Screen Resolution guide

How to Read Screen Resolution, Viewport Size and DPR

Inspect screen and viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio and browser-reported orientation. Understand CSS pixels, zoom and physical-display limitations.

Before you start

  • Use a current browser with JavaScript enabled. Read the limits below before using private or large inputs.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open Screen Resolution and read the reported screen dimensions.
  2. Compare Available screen with Screen; system UI can reduce the available area.
  3. Read Layout viewport and Visual viewport separately.
  4. Resize the browser or change zoom and watch the metrics update.
  5. Copy the fixed metric summary if you need it for a layout bug report.

Interpret results and limitations

Dimensions are browser-reported CSS pixels. Device pixel ratio describes the relationship between CSS pixels and device pixels and can change with zoom or moving between displays.

Multiplying dimensions by DPR does not certify a physical panel specification. Browsers may round or restrict screen information. Visual viewport can shrink with a mobile keyboard or pinch zoom.

Example

Use this example to understand the expected behavior before working with your own input.

A 1440 × 900 CSS-pixel screen with DPR 2 does not by itself certify the monitor model or physical resolution.

Troubleshooting

The numbers change when I zoom

Zoom can change CSS-pixel dimensions and DPR. Reset zoom when comparing values; use manufacturer specifications for physical-panel details.

The interface does not respond

Enable JavaScript, use a supported browser and check the input limits. Reloading clears temporary input and results.
