Mouse Test guide

How to Test Mouse Buttons, Right-Click Hold and Scrolling

Check mouse buttons, held states, double-clicks and the scroll wheel. Learn what the browser reports and how to troubleshoot missing events.

Before you start

  • Connect your mouse or use a trackpad that produces mouse-style events. Touch and pen input are not counted as mouse tests.
  • Keep the pointer inside the dedicated test area. Button assignments can differ from the physical left and right sides if your system swaps primary and secondary buttons.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the Mouse Test and click Start testing, or click inside the Pointer test area.
  2. Click the primary, secondary and middle buttons separately. Watch each button’s count increase when pressed.
  3. Hold the right button down without moving outside the area. The secondary button should show a held state; release it and check that the held state clears.
  4. Double-click the primary button. Check the Double-click events count, then scroll vertically and, if supported, horizontally.
  5. Move across the test area to inspect pointer position and distance. Use Reset to clear results and repeat the same sequence.

Read button counts and held states

A count records a button-down event, while the held indicator records the current pressed state. Holding a button should not be interpreted as repeated separate clicks. Try two buttons together to inspect a chord. Leaving the area or switching tabs clears held indicators, so complete a hold check while the area stays focused.

Back and Forward buttons may navigate the browser before you see a result. An absent count does not establish a broken side button. The test suppresses context menus and middle-button auto-scroll only inside its focused area.

Interpret scrolling and double-click events

Wheel deltas retain the browser’s pixel, line or page units. Compare direction and whether events arrive; do not compare raw numbers from different devices as a calibrated sensitivity score. Ctrl or Command with the wheel can still zoom the page.

Double-clicks follow native browser and system timing. A double-click event can be intentional and does not prove a faulty switch. Pointer distance is in CSS pixels; this tool does not measure DPI, polling rate or timed clicks per second.

Troubleshooting

The right-click menu appears instead of a result

Click inside the test area first and keep the pointer there. Menus outside the focused area remain normal browser behavior.

A held button suddenly clears

Check whether the pointer left the area, the window lost focus or the tab became hidden. Reset and repeat the hold entirely inside the area.

A button or wheel produces no events

Confirm focus, system button mappings and the device connection. Compare another browser or application before concluding that hardware is faulty.

Privacy and cleanup

Button counts and pointer details exist in this tab. No pointer history, device identifiers or test results are uploaded or saved. Reset clears the results; leaving the page ends the session.
