URL Encoder / Decoder guide

How to Encode and Decode URLs and Query Values

Encode URL components or complete URLs, decode percent escapes and handle form query values. Understand plus signs, spaces and malformed UTF-8 input.

Open URL Encoder / Decoder →

Before you start

  • Use a current browser with JavaScript enabled. Read the limits below before using private or large inputs.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Paste a value into Input.
  2. Choose Component for one path or query value; choose Whole URL to preserve URL delimiters.
  3. Choose Form query value when spaces should use plus signs.
  4. Click Encode or Decode and inspect the result.
  5. Copy the result; Clear removes both fields. Use Example to explore without private data.

Interpret results and limitations

Whole URL uses encodeURI/decodeURI and preserves reserved URL separators. Component mode uses encodeURIComponent/decodeURIComponent and treats delimiters as data.

Form query value mode converts spaces to + and decodes + as space. A literal plus encodes as %2B. Malformed escapes, invalid UTF-8 and unpaired Unicode surrogates are rejected. This tool does not fetch or navigate to entered URLs.

Example

Use this example to understand the expected behavior before working with your own input.

Component encode: hello world → hello%20world
Form encode: a+b c → a%2Bb+c

Troubleshooting

Decoding fails or a plus sign changes

Check percent escapes and UTF-8 bytes. Choose Component to preserve literal +, or Form query value to treat + as a space.

The interface does not respond

Enable JavaScript, use a supported browser and check the input limits. Reloading clears temporary input and results.
