How to Check Your Microphone and Record a Playback Clip
Run a mic check for a headset, laptop or USB microphone. Read input levels, record a short clip and troubleshoot quiet or missing audio.
Open Microphone Test →Before you start
- Connect the intended microphone, check its mute switch and open the HTTPS tool page in a browser with microphone support.
- Headphones help keep playback from reaching the microphone. Testing input levels does not automatically start a recording.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open the Microphone Test, click Start microphone and allow browser access.
- Choose the intended microphone from the input selector after devices become available. Speak normally and watch the live level meter.
- Move slightly closer or farther away and compare the relative level. Reduce input gain if the meter repeatedly approaches clipping.
- Click Record clip, speak a short sentence, then click Finish recording. Recording is limited to 30 seconds and 8 MiB.
- Click Stop microphone before using Play. Listen to the clip, download it if wanted, or clear it. Download before hiding or leaving the page because saved clips are cleared.
Understand microphone input levels
A moving meter shows that audio is reaching the browser. It displays relative digital amplitude, peak information and near-clipping; it is not calibrated sound-pressure decibels or a microphone quality score. The tool does not route live microphone input to the speakers.
Compare a quiet room with normal speech using the same input and system gain. Background movement may be ambient sound rather than your voice. Device selection matters: a laptop microphone can remain selected even when a headset is connected.
Recording, playback and downloads
Finish recording ends the clip while the meter can continue. Stop microphone releases capture and finalizes any current recording. Playback is offered after capture stops to reduce feedback.
The browser selects a supported recording format, typically WebM, MP4/M4A or Ogg; the download extension follows that format. A new clip replaces the previous one. If recording support is unavailable, the live meter may still work.
Troubleshooting
Permission is denied
Allow microphone access in browser site settings and operating-system privacy settings, then try Start again. A browser prompt can remain pending; use Cancel if you no longer want to start.
The microphone is detected but the meter is quiet
Check the chosen input, hardware mute, system input volume and connection. Close applications using the device and retry. A quiet signal alone does not prove hardware failure.
The meter works but playback is silent
Make sure you recorded a clip, stopped capture and selected the right system audio output. Check mute and output volume, then use the speaker test to check output separately.
Privacy and cleanup
Audio and optional recordings are processed locally. Stop, Cancel, hiding the page or navigation releases capture. Hiding or leaving clears saved clips; returning requires a new Start action.
