Speaker Test guide
How to Test Left and Right Speakers or Headphones
Check stereo sound output with short left and right tones. Troubleshoot silent playback, merged channels and incorrect audio output.
Open Speaker Test →Before you start
- Connect speakers or stereo headphones and select the intended output in your system or browser settings. The tool uses the default output.
- Start with low system volume. The page’s test volume does not control the operating-system volume or guarantee physical loudness.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open the Speaker Test and confirm the tab and system audio are not muted.
- Choose Gentle melody or 440 Hz tone, then click Left speaker and listen on the left side.
- Click Right speaker and listen on the right side. If needed, check which earpiece or speaker is physically left.
- Try Both channels, then Test sequence to compare left, right and both in one short sequence.
- Click Stop to cancel playback. After changing test volume, start a new test to hear the new setting.
Interpret left and right channel playback
Stereo headphones usually make channel separation easier to hear. Mono accessibility settings, mono devices or audio routing can merge the channels. Hearing both channels from both sides therefore does not automatically identify a broken speaker.
The tool cannot detect whether you actually heard a tone. A completed sequence means scheduled playback finished; it does not mean the speakers passed a hardware test. Judge audible output yourself and compare another audio source if something sounds wrong.
What the sound test measures
The default sound is a locally generated four-note melody lasting 2.7 seconds per step. You can choose a one-second 440 Hz sine tone instead. Both use short fades and pauses between channels. Default test volume is 30%, with maximum digital gain limited to 0.3.
This is an output and channel check. It does not test hearing, measure bass response, sweep frequencies or calibrate loudness. Low digital gain still requires sensible system volume because amplifiers and speakers differ.
Troubleshooting
No tone is audible
Check system output, muted tabs, system volume and the device connection. Click a playback button again after changing settings; playback needs an explicit action.
Left and right sound identical
Check mono audio settings and whether the output is genuinely stereo. Try stereo headphones and confirm their orientation.
Playback stops unexpectedly
Switching tabs, changing sound or test volume, starting another test or pressing Stop cancels playback intentionally. Return and start a new test.
Privacy and cleanup
No camera or microphone permission is requested and no sound is recorded. Playback is generated locally. Stopping, hiding the page or navigation closes the audio resources.
